Since COVID-19 and the various lockdowns, campervans and van life have become more and more popular in the UK and around the world. Whilst some people prefer to buy ready-made campervans, many are choosing DIY options and converting vans themselves.
Gas cylinders are frequently used in campervans for cooking, but sometimes also for heating the space and even hot water. This can lead to a variety of health and safety issues, however with the right precautions gas bottles can be used safely in campervans.
1. Check the equipment is in good condition
Check hoses, cylinders, and any connecting parts before use. Look out for rust, loose connections, or any signs of degradation of the hose. All equipment should be stamped with the manufacture date and should be replaced every 5 years.
2. Ventilation
It’s important the gas cylinder is kept in a well-ventilated area. The most commonly used gases are heavier than air so they will sink to the bottom of the van, so it’s good practice to install vents under where gas is stored so any leaks are removed from the vehicle. Many campervans are fitted with a gas locker, which is a separate sealed area with ventilation and is a good solution to this problem.
3. Fit a Carbon Monoxide Alarm
Carbon Monoxide is a toxic gas that is produced from burning gases like LPG and butane. It is colourless, odourless, and can be very dangerous, especially in small or poorly ventilated areas. An alarm will ensure if any of the gas begins to build up, you’re aware and can act accordingly to keep yourself safe.
4. Turn off before travel
It’s important to always turn off gas cylinders at the valve before travelling to ensure no leaks occur when driving. The movement puts stress on the connective parts, which can lead to leaks. A cylinder is much less dangerous if an accident were to occur if the valve is turned off.
